The Popularity of Silicone Bakeware
Since the 1940s the world has been using silicone. It is one of the most versatile materials around and it offers some significantly strong properties that allow it to be used in many industries, processes and machinery. These properties include the facts that it’s:
· Repellent to water, ultra-violet rays, oxygen and ozone
· Entirely non-stick
· Of very low toxicity, yet does not allow microbial growth
· Non-reactant with many other chemicals
· Thermally stable – meaning it is secure at extremes of heat and cold
These are only a few of the features of silicone that make it popular, but they are also the key factors that make it such an excellent material in the kitchen. While most sets of cook and bakeware have been constructed of metals such as tin and aluminium, today’s cooks can put silicone bakeware to work in their kitchens for superior results.
Silicone bakeware is something that most active bakers describe as “a dream come true”. This is because it eliminates many of the problems that traditionally plague bakers of all skill levels. For example, silicone bakeware entirely eliminates the need to grease and flour the pan. This produces an end result free of the unappealing evidence of the pan’s preparation.
Silicone bakeware also deals with the heat in the oven in an entirely different way than a traditional pan. Consider the oven with the proverbial “hot spot”, which simply translates to an oven that does not fill the cooking space with an even amount of heat. This results in scorched areas of a cake or several cookies or muffins being over done. A baker using silicone bakeware will be able to enjoy the conductivity of the material, which distributes the heat evenly and quickly through the entire pan.
It is important to note that silicone bakeware does not require any kind of special treatment or conditions and is a totally different material to everyday silicone sealant. It is entirely food safe and will not interact with any acids or ingredients in strange or unpredictable ways. This cannot be said of standard bakeware sets that can often leave a “tinny” or metallic taste in certain foods.
Another great feature about silicone bakeware is its ability to go from freezer to oven without any negative effects. Like the older and heavier baking sets, silicone bakeware is naturally conditioned to perform well at even extreme conditions. This means that the muffin cups, cake pans and various pieces will not warp, shrink or respond in any way to the conditions to which they are exposed. This too is entirely unique to silicone bakeware.
Finally, many cooks complain about the buildup of materials that mars the look of their traditional, metal bakeware. This can result in specks and flakes attaching to the food, and it can also be a breeding ground for bacteria. A silicone bakeware set or piece is going to resist any microbial growth and never discolour.
It is important to note that a baker may have to experiment a bit to discover how silicone bakeware will act or perform in their oven, but once they determine the best settings and conditions, they will have superior results every time they cook.
